Reapportionment Coming Soon
Every ten years, after the U.S. Census, all states re-draw district lines for the election of state and congressional elected officials based on new population data. Hawaii is no exception.
Next month, newly selected reapportionment commissioners will begin work on new Hawaii election district lines to be used in the 2012 elections. They have a greast deal of autonomy. The members are selected by the majority and minority in both the House and Senate; two members each for a total of 8.
The 8 then must select a 9th as chair.
The group will redraw all 51 House Districts, 25 Senate districts and the two Congressional seat boundaries. Oahu may lose and Maui may gain representation.
The appointees include: Clarice Hashimoto (House Speaker), Harold S. Matsumoto (House Speaker), Lorrie Lee Stone (Senate President), Antony Takitani (Senate President), Dylan Nonaka (House Minority), Terry E. Thomason (House Minority), Elisabeth N. Moore (Senate Minority), and Cal Chipchase IV (Senate Minority).
